Adsorption Technology MB12 – the sustainable food packaging solution

Packaging Solutions

Chapelton has announced that Smurfit Kappa’s Adsorption Technology MB12, for which it is the distributor in the UK, is proving to be a successful and effective choice for brand owners and food packaging providers who not only want a sustainable quality but also require a grade that has zero migration of oils whilst retaining the food aroma and taste qualities.

This was particularly relevant when a solution was required for the packaging of cake slices containing alcohol as well as needing good protection against grease. The customer also requested a board of recycled quality, yet one that protected the packaging from organic migration whilst maintaining the taste and aroma of the cake slices themselves.

The perfect solution was to use the MB12 board grades with adsorption technology. A sustainable material that can be fully recycled, and allowed no migration whilst retaining the aroma and taste of the food.

This means that brand owners and food packaging providers can be reassured that when a sustainable, protective and migration – free product is required, the simple choice is the MB12 technology.

The MB12 technology has been proven to reduce the migration of any organic substance by 99%, and has been tested for a shelf life of more than 12 months. Food safety is certified by Eurofins, Isega and other world leaders in food and pharmaceutical product testing

The adsorption substance layer in the recycled board retains any organics within the material and adsorbs these prevent migration even from cut edges meaning that current carton designs can be maintained. This assures food products of reliable protection against contamination by migration of organic materials and means packaging designers and producers do not have to make use of extra barrier layers. It also protects against organoleptic effects of any taste and odour on the food providing the end customer with an untainted product. The adsorption substance is contained in the grey middle layers (filler) of the board where all the organics are adsorbed and retained.

Commenting on the success of Smurfit Kappa’s MB12 adsorption technology in the food packaging sector, Chapelton managing director Neil Skelton stated, ‘The MB12 adsorption technology is proving to be an excellent solution for those with concerns regarding migration of contaminants in to food products and for those who wish to keep the integrity of the products they are packaging. Given that there is no need for packaging design change and that the product is unaffected by outside odours means it is the perfect choice for brand owners and food manufacturers. The fact that it is a recycled and recyclable it is also an outstanding sustainable choice.’

Referred to by Smurfit Kappa as, ‘the most innovative offering on the market’, MB12 board grades are produced using natural ingredients, which adhere to the company’s sustainability standards. Developed in response to the prospective legislation which prohibits the measurable migration of mineral oil and other hydrocarbons into food products, MB12 is 100% recyclable as a mono material, and as the adsorption substance contained within its make up originates from FSC certified sources, the FSC Chain of Custody is also maintained.
