UPDATE: We were delighted to hear that Chloe has won an 'Excellence in Enterprise' achievement award from her school for raising money in the Smarties Enterprise Challenge – with a little help from her friends here at Earth Island. Well done Chloe!

The school raised an impressive £2978.13!

Children from Southborough Primary School in Tunbridge Wells have been busy raising money for a very good cause.

Taking part in the Smarties Enterprise Challenge, the children were asked to develop a money making idea by using a tube of Smarties as the basis to raise funds for a local charity.

The money raised is to be donated to Kent conservation and environmental initiative, Kent High Weald Partnership, which has recently had its truck, resources and tools stolen.

High Weald carries out projects such as:

  • Conservation work in nature reserves with volunteers who join them because they share their passion for wildlife or maybe they feel lonely and enjoy the company and fresh air.

  • Gardening in parks with people who have mental health difficulties.

  • Teaching gardening skills to local people on a community allotment

  • Running Forest School in local woods, giving children freedom and skills to build wonderful memories, which they can take with them to adulthood.

  • Working with the local community in parks and gardens, researching the best flowers for our bees and pollinators.

  • Working outdoors with families in difficulty, helping them build relationships with each other.

One enterprising Southborough Primary School pupil, Chloe Willis, decided to bake some cakes with her Smarties, which she sold to family and friends. But she wanted to go the extra mile, so she turned to local ethical company Earth Island, publisher of environmental magazine Green Solutions.

Teaching children about sustainability – especially about good management of forests – is close to our hearts, so we were happy to support Chloe with a donation of £50 towards her fundraising.

We wish all the pupils at Southborough Primary School well and hope they all enjoy the challenge and learning more about forests.
