Antalis Packaging is helping businesses make better informed decisions about their packaging by giving them access to detailed lifecycle assessment (LCA) data and analysis.
Through access to Sphera’s LCA software and global environmental database, Antalis Packaging can compare the environmental impact of different packaging solutions across their lifecycle. The technology provides access to extensive LCA datasets covering different materials, industries and geographical markets, allowing packaging options to be assessed using consistent data.
Importantly, the company is not making the choice for the customer. Instead, it provides the data and comparisons needed to understand the potential environmental impact of different options, allowing businesses to consider the findings alongside their own priorities, requirements and supply chains.

‘Customers are increasingly asking us how they can make better packaging choices, but there is no one size fits all answer,’ said John Garner, packaging category director. ‘What is right for one application may not be right for another. Our role is to provide the evidence that allows customers to understand the differences and make an informed choice.’
The assessment goes far beyond simply comparing the materials used in a product. Antalis can assess existing packaging and consider the complete lifecycle, from design and raw materials through manufacturing, transport, use, recycling, and end of life.
This helps businesses identify where the greatest environmental impacts occur and where opportunities to improve exist.
For example, a customer considering polypropylene tape versus paper tape may assume that the paper option is automatically the more sustainable choice. However, the answer can be more complex. The LCA approach enables assessment across the lifecycle, accounting for factors such as materials, manufacturing, transportation, and end of life considerations.
The result is a factual comparison that helps businesses understand the potential impact of different options, rather than deciding based simply on a material's perceived environmental credentials.
The LCA software and data available to Antalis provide access to a substantial global knowledge base. Sphera's LCA solution includes more than 20,000 full LCA datasets, covering 80 countries and more than 60 industries, alongside extensive emissions data and industry specific information.
The data is supported by quality assurance, third party review and verification, strict modelling principles and ongoing maintenance.
For Antalis, this adds another dimension to its design-led approach, combining packaging expertise with detailed environmental data.
‘We are already working with leading retailers, aerospace, automotive, logistics companies and brands as decisions are becoming increasingly complex,’ added John. ‘Businesses are balancing legislation, customer expectations, cost, performance and sustainability. By providing data, we can help customers understand the potential impact of different choices and give them the information they need to make decisions with confidence.’
With increasing pressure to reduce packaging waste and environmental impact, businesses need reliable information when reviewing their packaging.
‘Whether assessing an existing solution, comparing alternative materials, or looking at a product's full lifecycle, Antalis Packaging is working collaboratively with customers to provide the data and expertise to help understand options and identify opportunities for improvement,’ added John.
