callas software has announced a new nesting technology module designed for OEM partners building automated print and production workflows. The new module enables software developers and workflow vendors to calculate optimised nesting layouts for multiple PDF files on a given sheet size, improving material efficiency and production throughput.
Nesting plays an essential role in many industrial printing environments, including packaging, wide format printing, textile production, and signage. The callas nesting module is designed to integrate easily into automated workflows and production platforms.

‘Many of our OEM partners build highly automated production systems,’ said Jeremy Spencer, OEM director at callas software. ‘They need reliable technology components that can be integrated directly into their workflows. The new nesting module provides exactly that: an efficient and flexible nesting engine that can be integrated into existing systems.’
For customers producing large numbers of print items on different substrates, efficient nesting can make a significant difference in production costs. The new pdfNest module was designed to easily integrate into the systems the callas OEM partners build. It is the perfect complement to pdfToolbox. Where pdfToolbox is focused on enabling automation and efficiency gains for automated file intake and correction, pdfNest focuses on increasing output sheet efficiency.
The nesting module is designed specifically for integration into automated production environments. It accepts XML and/or SVG for the description of the items to be nested, and delivers the same on output with the definition of the imposed sheets. An easy to use API makes for quick and easy integration.
The nesting engine is provided as a separate module for OEM partners and is not part of the standard pdfToolbox 17 release. It is intended for software vendors and solution developers who integrate callas technology into their own products or workflow platforms.
The release of the nesting module coincides with the introduction of pdfToolbox 17, the newest version of callas software’s flagship PDF automation platform. Several of the new pdfToolbox 17 features, such as cut line simplification, are aimed directly at making the nesting technology more performant.
