Chapelton has announced that it has become a carbon neutral operation thanks to its partnership with CarbonQuota, a company which specialises in calculating the carbon impact of manufacturing.

After an initial six month process, the company embarked on the journey to become a carbon neutral operation, believing it will be of benefit to suppliers and customers alike. The decision to work with CarbonQuota to achieve this was easy due to it being a well respected company with experience in both the paper and print industry.

Managing director Neil Skelton stated, ‘This is a great beginning for Chapelton, achieving carbon neutral status will benefit our customers and suppliers, eventually offering products that meet the needs of the environmentally conscious. This first step is focusing on our direct operations and in the future we will include all logistics and products. The carbon emissions we are still in the process of reducing will be offset by three CarbonQuota portfolio projects, until we can fully eliminate them. These projects are Pacajai REDD+, Brazil (Verra Project 981), Tropical Mix, Panana (Gold Standard Project 2940) and Green Infra Wind Gujarat, India (Gold Standard Project 7795).’

Neil added that the process has not yet meant the introduction of any new products, however in time a large proportion of its material will be available carbon neutral.

‘We are currently working on a plan to reduce our CO2e emissions, and have begun streamlining how we manage our in-house waste, alongside other environmental projects such as removing as much single use packaging as possible. We are working to reduce this further,’ Neil stated. ‘We are also looking at ways to reduce both our commuter and business miles. Our reduction of carbon use is part of our long term business plan.’

Kent based Chapelton supplies both virgin and recycled fibre grades from a range of key global suppliers and is dual certificated to both Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) environmental standards.

With a 37 year history and reputation for high quality products, innovative materials, and outstanding customer service, the company is a leading independent paper and board supplier, servicing the UK and Irish print and packaging sectors and dealing with many of the major global paper and board manufacturers.

The company has been certified carbon neutral in accordance with the study carried out by CarbonQuota. This included Scope 1 GHG emissions related to natural gas consumption; Scope 2 GHG emissions associated with purchased electricity; Scope 3 GHG emissions relating to commuting, business travel, fuel for employee owned vehicles and office management. All other Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions have been excluded as part of the operational boundary of Chapelton and this study.
