Cyclus Offset chosen for Free Thought FM book

Paper Solutions

Antalis’ Cyclus Offset 100% recycled uncoated paper was selected by Dublin based design studio Unthink, for production of a book supporting an FM radio station by artist Garrett Phelan.

The Free Thought FM book is intended to be a manual for practitioners and interested parties as they explore the subject of education and class. The choice of substrate was an important component in helping Unthink to achieve the utilitarian aesthetic required.

Licensed for just 30 days, Free Thought FM was a radio station which provided an open forum where free thinkers and members of the public could join presenter Phelan to explore issues primarily around class inequality and access to education in Dublin.

The Free Thought FM book captures the ideas, concerns and solutions that were raised through documentary photography, academic essays and insightful diagrams. A limited colour palette brings order and consistency to the diverse content while the print substrate was also an important factor, as Noelle Cooper of Unthink explained, ‘To reinforce the utilitarian aesthetic we were hoping to achieve, we needed a tactile, uncoated paper. Antalis was very helpful when it came to choosing papers and provided us with a variety of dummies to help us in the decision making process.’

For the cover of the book, grey board was covered in Cyclus Offset FSC certified, 100% recycled 135 g/m2. Cyclus Offset was also used for the end papers, in 170 g/m2, and for the text pages, in 155 g/m2. The book was printed lithographically using a four colour press, and the cover matt laminated for durability.
