Micropress Printers has futureproofed its plate production with a highly automated CTP solution from Kodak. The Reydon, Suffolk based printer is a family owned business established over 50 years ago that has continuously expanded its services in response to evolving customer needs.
After investing in a world first eight colour B1 sheetfed offset press with Plate to Unit and Inspection Control technology last year, which joined another eight colour and ten colour press, Micropress identified the need to significantly speed up and improve the efficiency of its platemaking. Following a comprehensive evaluation of available options, the printer decided to adopt new Kodak CTP technology.

The productivity and automation of Kodak's platesetters, as well as the superior features of Squarespot imaging technology, were key factors in the decision. ‘In our opinion, Squarespot stands out as a fantastic technology that combines all the key advantages we expect from an innovative CTP solution: highest resolution, precision, and repeatability, ensuring reliable, high quality results in pre-press and on press,’ commented James Cross, joint managing director, Micropress.
Kodak initially installed a Magnus Q800 platesetter with T speed and Single Pallet Loader (SPL) automation. The CTP system, capable of imaging up to 80 plates per hour, was integrated with a new automated line for punching, bending, and sorting the plates. Micropress has now ordered another Magnus Q800 with X speed (45 plates per hour) and an SPL. Once the second Q800 is installed, the printer will have a CTP configuration capable of fully automatically loading, imaging, punching, bending, and sorting up to 125 B1 plates per hour. In addition, the equipment can be upgraded to increase plate throughput in the future.
To help protect uptime and keep plates moving, the solution is supported by a premier support plan. This gives Micropress direct access to expert help and prioritised service when it matters most. The result is fewer disruptions, faster recovery, and more predictable day to day production.
‘We are delighted that Micropress has chosen Kodak and our most powerful commercial print CTP platform to modernise its platemaking operations. The high productivity of the system and the use of Squarespot imaging technology will help Micropress reliably supply its presses with high quality plates and consistently meet the quality requirements of its discerning customers,’ commented Denisse Goldbarg, chief marketing officer and head of EAMER sales, Kodak.
