Navigator recognised as one of the world's most sustainable companies in the forestry sector

Print Solutions Green Solutions

The Navigator Company is at the top of the list of paper and forestry companies with the lowest ESG risk for investors.

Navigator is thus ranked first out of a total of 85 global companies in the paper and forestry industry cluster and also first out of 63 in the paper and pulp cluster and top 5% out of more than 16,200 companies worldwide in all business segments.

The company obtained a score of 11.6 in Sustainalytics' ESG Risk Rating 2024, placing it at the top of the list of companies with the lowest ESG risk, on the lower fringe of the ‘low’ risk level, with the vast majority of material topics presenting negligible risk.

Sustainalytics' ESG Risk Ratings measure a company's sustainability performance by assessing its exposure to material ESG risks related to environmental, social and corporate governance factors, as well as the way in which the company manages them.

Navigator is therefore on the lower fringes of the ‘low’ risk level, with the vast majority of topics presenting a ‘negligible’ risk. Its continued commitment to strengthening practices relating to the environmental, social and governance aspects of its business has resulted in solid management of its exposure to ESG risks, assessed in more than 70 indicators of the Sustainalytics framework, which has enabled it to make a very significant improvement in this rating.

The indicators assessed cover topics related to corporate governance, carbon emissions management, waste and effluents, water management, community relations, products and services, human capital, health and safety at work, land use and biodiversity, and stakeholder governance.

Navigator's assessment and good position in this ranking are relevant data that reflect the work carried out by the company to integrate sustainability as a priority in its business model, demonstrating its ability to anticipate and manage ESG risks in the conduct of its activities. In 2023, the company had already been classified as a low risk company for investors and recognised as an ‘ESG industry top rated company’ in the same rating. But in 2024 it significantly improved its score and its position in the ranking.

The company also stands out as a member of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, an organisation of high global relevance in the field of sustainability that brings together some of the world's largest companies, and is the only Portuguese company to participate in the Forest Solutions Group, the organisation's sector group for forests.

It should be noted that, at the end of 2022, the company saw its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), affirming its leadership in sustainability and its ambition in finding solutions to the climate challenge, in line with science.

In February 2024, Navigator was once again recognised as a leader in the fight against climate change, and also in forest management, receiving an ‘A-’ rating from CDP – Disclosure Insight Action.

At the same time, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and social inclusion by signing the More and Better Companies for Young People Pact. This pact aims to create more favourable conditions for young people to enter and develop in the labour market, promoting equal opportunities and professional training.

Also at the beginning of this year, Navigator joined the United Nations Global Compact and its 10 principles focused on human rights, labour practices, environmental protection and anti corruption, with the aim of promoting responsible business conduct.
