In today’s personalisation driven economy, customer expectations are changing fast. In a crowded retail landscape, buyers are increasingly drawn to products that feel meaningful and made just for them. Expectations around quality, variety, customisation and speed of delivery continue to rise, placing growing pressure on print providers to deliver short run, highly personalised products, often at peak seasonal demand and with tight turnaround times.

For print businesses, growth now depends on flexibility, efficiency and creative capability. This was exactly the challenge Meridian 3 faced as it looked to evolve its operations and unlock new opportunities.

The company began in digital print, offering traditional products such as business cards and glossy brochures. But as customer demand shifted, the business recognised the opportunity to expand beyond conventional print into personalised product creation.

That transformation accelerated with the investment in the Roland DG EU-1000MF UV-LED flatbed printer. With this addition, Meridian 3 significantly broadened its offering, introducing customised items including jigsaw puzzles, notebooks, keyrings, medals and badges – products designed to meet the growing demand for personalisation across both business to business and consumer markets.

The company move into personalised products began in 2021 with a one off request for a custom jigsaw puzzle. What started as an experiment quickly revealed a promising new revenue stream.

To scale this opportunity, it carefully evaluated multiple technology partners. Ultimately, the company chose Roland DG, a brand it already trusted for reliability and long term support. For Meridian 3, dependable equipment was non negotiable, particularly during peak trading periods when even minimal downtime could have a serious impact on the business.

The EU-1000MF UV-LED flatbed printer was selected specifically to support the rapid growth of Meridian 3’s personalised jigsaw puzzle offering, while also opening the door to a wider range of custom products. Its performance during the holiday gifting season proved critical, enabling it to meet spikes in demand without overworking staff or compromising on quality. What began as a niche product quickly became a seasonal bestseller.

The impact of the EU-1000MF was immediate. By enabling direct to substrate printing on materials such as wood, acrylic, aluminium and other rigid substrates, Meridian 3 was able to eliminate extra production steps and significantly reduce turnaround times.

The ability to print multiple items simultaneously increased output capacity while expanding the range of products the business could offer. At the same time, the printer’s high density, low cost E-US inks allowed the company to achieve premium finishes, layered effects and a wider variety of textures – unlocking new creative possibilities and higher value product lines.

Importantly, the EU-1000MF also eased pressure on the existing equipment, allowing other machines to focus on core business to business work. This improved operational balance made it possible to scale consumer facing offerings without adding strain to the business.

The value of the investment extended well beyond the hardware itself. After Service Offset Supplies worked with Meridian 3 to select the printer, it was installed shortly after the company relocated to a new facility, presenting workflow challenges that required flexibility and collaboration. When it became clear that the most efficient set up involved relocating the printer, Roland DG’s support team ensured the transition was seamless.

For managing director Barry Smith this level of aftercare stood out: ‘The Roland DG team has been fantastic. The team came down and moved the printer for us, gave us plenty of training and helped with colour control and quality. It has been really good to us.’

Ongoing access to technical support continues to give Meridian 3 confidence, particularly during high pressure seasonal periods when consistent output is critical. The team is also exploring the benefits of Roland DG Connect, recognising its potential to support performance monitoring and operational efficiency.

As hyper customisation continues to shape the print industry, the company is well positioned to grow without compromising on quality or service. Central to this is a technology partner that not only meets today’s needs but supports long term ambition.

‘Personalisation is what our customers are asking for and this technology allows us to deliver it at scale – quickly, consistently and to a high standard,’ Barry added.

More than a production upgrade, the Roland DG EU-1000MF UV-LED flatbed printer has given Meridian 3 the agility to experiment, diversify and plan for the future. The business continues to expand its personalised product range – adding new items such as keychains, notebooks, seasonal decorations and further developing its bestselling jigsaw puzzles.

In an evolving market defined by speed, quality and individuality, this partnership demonstrates how the right technology, backed by responsive, expert support, can help print businesses adapt, scale and stay ahead of changing customer demands.
