Ahlstrom introduces an innovative home compostable lid for single serve coffee capsules

Packaging Solutions

Ahlstrom has announced the launch of PureLid, a fibre based lid offering for single serve coffee capsules to support the coffee industry in its sustainability journey. PureLid offers a high performing, home compostable alternative to aluminium or plastic lids used in coffee capsules.

It has received the Ok compost Home and Ok compost Industrial certifications from TÜV, which means the product can be composted at home and in an industrial facility.

This innovative, patented coffee lid structure is ready to seal on coffee capsules, making it an ideal choice for manufacturers who are looking to embrace the future of sustainable coffee packaging.

PureLid is compatible with the most common bio based coffee capsules on the market, making it a versatile choice for coffee brands looking to reduce their environmental footprint. It also features an adequate oxygen barrier that preserves the coffee's flavour and freshness.

Furthermore, PureLid incorporates a built-in filter that effectively retains dust, ensuring optimal brewing performance and a consistently pure coffee taste with every cup. One of the remarkable features is its transition from industrial compostability to home compostability while preserving capsule performance and the critical oxygen barrier.

‘It was a substantial challenge to transition from industrial compostable solutions to home compostable ones while maintaining the high performance standards of our coffee capsule lidding solutions and the crucial oxygen barrier. However, our team's dedication and expertise have made PureLid a reality, setting a new standard for sustainable coffee packaging,’ said Philippe Sevoz, vice president of the beverage and casing business.

‘Ahlstrom is committed to sustainability and innovation, and PureLid is a testament to our dedication to creating sustainable solutions for the coffee industry. We believe that PureLid will not only enhance the coffee experience but also contribute to a more sustainable future for our customers and their consumers.’
