MagID, the marking and tracing technology backed by Horizon 2020 funding from the European Commission, has launched as an independent start up under the name MagVision.

MagID, which uses barcodes printed in magnetic ink, is a technology which sits between RFID and visual barcodes. Originally developed for the secure document sector by Inspectron, MagID has spun off under the MagVision brand to focus on the growing market for identification, marking and authentication. MagVision offers solutions for brand protection and secure documents and can measure the transition to circularity by tracing products along their life journey.

MagID codes are simply printed onto brand packaging, labels or documents, providing every item with a unique, yet hidden identity. Tracking, authentication and destination data can be accessed via MagVision’s cloud-based system after scanning the code. The platform supports MagID codes, but also visual barcodes and RFID tags.

MagID is currently being tested for different applications with partners in the UK, Mexico and India, since being initially unveiled in 2020. The company continues to seek funding to enhance the technology and expand its service offering.

Dr Nathalie Muller, head of innovation, MagVision, said: ‘MagID is an exciting technology which can tag and trace products, packaging and documents in an environmentally sustainable way. It is robust and has a wide range of applications, offering a cost effective alternative to RFID in many situations.’
