Falconer introduces four day working week to support better work-life balance

Falconer has adopted a four day working week for its team, strengthening its commitment to employee wellbeing, productivity and stability. The move was inspired by managing director Richard Martin’s personal experience with a four day schedule, which he has followed for several years.

Effective 31 March 2025, the new model allows team members to condense their hours into four days while ensuring uninterrupted customer service and production. All departments will remain operational Monday to Friday, so clients experience the high standards for which Falconer is known.

‘After working a four day week and experiencing first hand the benefits of a better work-life balance, I wanted to extend that opportunity to the rest of the team. It is a commercial decision grounded in putting people first,’ said Richard. ‘We believe that happier, more focused employees lead to stronger business outcomes and early signs already support that thinking.’

So far, about 50% of Falconer’s team have opted into the new pattern, with many others interested in transitioning soon. The system provides flexibility while maintaining operational resilience. This phased approach allows the business to adapt gradually, giving team members confidence to explore a new way of working.

Although the transition is still early, employee feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Staff report greater focus, improved energy, and more time for family, hobbies, or to recharge. This is beginning to translate into stronger productivity and morale.

‘The primary aim has always been to give our people the option of a healthier work-life balance. However, we also view this as an opportunity to position ourselves more attractively in a competitive job market. It is a strong message to future recruits and a meaningful way to retain the talented people we already have,’ added Richard.

In an industry where speed, service and reliability are paramount, Falconer’s move demonstrates that thoughtful change can benefit both people and customers. By rethinking traditional working structures, the business creates an environment where staff can thrive without compromising what clients value most.
