It defines a standard way to include processing steps (ie data for additional steps in the production of labels besides printing) in a PDF. It is common practice in the packaging workflow to include visual representations for finishing eg cutting, creasing, foiling, etc, in pre-press PDF files. Until recently this was done in an ad hoc way using various methods like layer naming or separation naming. But this didn’t prevent misinterpretation of such data or even creating wrong print output.
